Alumni Athletic Spotlight

Ian Schirra

Ian Schirra, Aquinas Academy class of ’17, (college sophomore) swims at Division I Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Ian is in the Honors College and is a Computer Science major. He has been on the Dean’s List all three semesters. Ian was recently inducted into the Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society for Computing and Information Disciplines.

Some highlights from this season::

Lynchburg, Va. (February 23, 2019) – Will Twizell placed second in the 200 breaststroke and the Mountaineers broke a pair of program records to highlight the final day of the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championships on Saturday. The Mount finished in sixth place at the Championships with 277 team points... In the 200 breast, the Mount had two other swimmers join Twizell in scoring points for the team. John Wilson swam to a seventh-place finish in 2:06.46, and Ian Schirra placed 17th with a time of 2:13.94...

Lynchburg, Va. (February 20, 2019) -- The Mount St. Mary's men's swimming & diving team set new school records in both relay events on the opening day of the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championships on Wednesday. The Mountaineers sit in sixth place in the team standings through one day of competition... In the 800 free relay, the Mount's 'B' relay squad of Matt Hart, Matt Wehmeyer, Luke Smist, and Nicholas Starvaggi registered a time of 7:31.45. In the 200 medley relay, the 'B' relay squad of Ethan Pham, Ian Schirra, Thomas de Xavier, and John Wilson combined for a time of 1:35.44. ...

Emmitsburg, Md. (January 26, 2019) – The Mount St. Mary's men's swimming & diving team broke four school records on Saturday, but fell to La Salle by a 134-73 margin. John Wilson was responsible for setting a pair of new records in the 100 breast and 200 IM. The sophomore won the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.69, eclipsing his own school record of 1:06.65 set earlier this season. Wilson also set a new mark in the 200 IM (2:12.42), besting out Will Twizell's previous record of 2:13.56. ... Ian Schirra posted a second-place finish in the 100 breast (1:09.35), Twizell took second in the 100 back (59.75), and Carroll claimed second in the 100 fly (59.31) for the team’s other top finishes of the day.

Baltimore, Md. (November 30, 2018) – The Mount St. Mary’s men’s swimming & diving team rounded out day one of the Loyola H2ounds Invitational on Friday night in fifth place... Ian Schirra posted the team’s top performance in the 200 IM, racing to a time of 2:06.89 to place 24th in the event.

Lancaster, Pa. (November 17, 2018) – The Mount St. Mary’s men’s swimming & diving team remained in third place following the second day of the Franklin & Marshall Invitational on Saturday. Will Twizell highlighted the night for the Mountaineers by setting a new program record in the 200 breast... John Wilson and Ian Schirra joined Twizell as scorers in the 200 breast. Wilson posted a time of 2:07.82 to finish fifth, and Schirra notched a 2:14.08 to take 14th place.

Our thanks to these former Aquinas students who will be working to coordinate Alumni events and activities on behalf of all Aquinas Academy high school and middle school graduates! Their first order of business will be to make contact with high school and middle school graduates from the classes of 1999 to 2013, as well as many Aquinas students from the early years of the school.
